The Grandmother of the Waters

awakened, receptive, not yet friendly

The Grandmother of the Waters

The ancient guardian of Isla Hela’s shoals. She has been bleeding into the seabed for decades through the trench that bears her name, and the return of the Clarion to her waters woke her.

[!summary] Teased by Glasya in S10, named and communed with in S11. As of the end of Session 11 the party is anchored directly above her, with a 45 lb Clarion crate poised on the gunwale and a colossal glowing presence waiting in the deep.

Canon Facts

  • S10 — the first mention. Morrigan reached out to Glasya while approaching the reef (DC 15): “You’re standing above something very old, little bird. Whatever you’re about to do down there, keep it quick. The grandmother of these waters does not appreciate guests who linger.” Glasya added the riddle: “Keep the thing in your hands close. When someone down there asks what you want, don’t say ‘the crate.’ Say something true.” At that point the entity was unexplained and unnamed.
  • S11 — named and identified. Gus formally identified the fissure beneath The Bleached Lady as The Grandmother’s Scar and the sacred locus of the Grandmother of the Waters, and warned the party about her before they sailed out.
  • S11 — she filtered the cure. In the Session 11 climax she acted as the Archfey Wellspring Filter in the three-part cleansing — Briony as living druidic conduit, the Grandmother as filter, Morrigan holding the Darkiron Siphon Core. The industrial corruption was purged as the energy passed through the natural fracture. The warm sapphire arc that came back out cured Gus’s thirty-year Salt Rot.
  • S11 — the covenant. By demonstrating true healing rather than acquisition, Morrigan fulfilled Glasya’s riddle, and the Grandmother acknowledged the covenant. Her status in the manifest is Awakened / Receptive.
  • What woke her. The raw Clarion crate returning to Isla Hela, combined with Morrigan’s attuned Siphon Core.
  • The Scar is not the party’s fault. The trench has been weeping ambient ley-line energy for decades — long before Atlas drilling, and it, not the crate, bleached the reef. Gus has dived it for thirty years, since a pre-Consortium survey near a singing Fae node. The crate was only there for days.
  • Where the party stands now. The Shadow Sprinter hovers over the deep sapphire fissure with Gus at the helm. Lowering the crate initiates full communion.

Description

  • Visuals: Established at the table only as a colossal, glowing presence in the deep, and the sapphire light of the Scar itself. She has no confirmed body or face.
  • Voice/Mannerisms: Experienced in S11 as a shared psychic communion rather than speech — the water dissolving into something the whole party was inside of. She asks what you want. She can tell when you are lying.

Roleplay Traits

  • Ideal: Restitution. Not punishment — she wants what was taken out of her water put back.
  • Bond: The living reef and the shoals of Isla Hela.
  • Flaw: She has been wounded and half-asleep for decades and does not distinguish finely between the people who cut her and the people who merely arrived afterward. She does not appreciate guests who linger.

Background

Older than the Children of the Salt, older than the Tide Mother’s cloisters, older than Atlas. The rulings classify her as an archfey / primordial tide-entity and ley-line guardian; the vault has deliberately never pinned her to one category, and the S10 debrief left the open question “Archfey? Ancient elemental? Spirit of the reef?” on the table.

Mechanics / Stats

  • No stat block exists and none should be invented. She is written as a social and environmental force, not a combatant.
  • Prep shorthand, if a physical manifestation is ever needed: “The Reef’s Guardian (The Grandmother’s Echo)” in 00-Sessions/Session_11/11_Plan.md §221 — a coral-encrusted Water Elemental or Archfey Presence, with high-pressure currents (DC 14 STR save) and riddle resolution. Treat this as an echo of her, not her.
  • Her mechanical role in the cleansing is documented in Siphon_Core (the “Thorne Formula” / Isla Hela Cleansing Protocol).
