The Children of the Salt

“The sea does not negotiate with the shore. What was taken must be drowned; what was built must be salted.”
— Litany of the Third Tide

🌊 Overview & Core Doctrine

The Children of the Salt are the dominant indigenous religious movement and militant resistance throughout the archipelago. Outwardly, they present as a peaceful traditionalist herbal ministry; inwardly, their initiated core is a fanatical apocalyptic cult committed to the Shuttering Ritual—an ancient ceremony meant to raise an impenetrable barrier of mist and violent storms around the islands, isolating them forever from the mainland.

Core Beliefs

  1. The Ocean is a Living Body: Vae’a, the Tide Mother, is the sacred heart of the archipelago. The islands are her bones, and the subterranean ley-lines are her veins.
  2. Clarion is Sacred Marrow: They view raw Clarion not as a commercial ore or fuel, but as the calcified, holy essence/blood of the deep seabed. Mining it with iron machinery is spiritual mutilation.
  3. The Salt Rot is Retaliation: They do not believe Salt Rot is a medical disease. They believe it is the sea’s divine antibody—a righteous curse punishing landwalkers for their greed. Calcification is seen as the Tide Mother reclaiming flesh.
  4. The Need for “The Silence”: The mechanical clanking of Atlas dredging drills and coal steamships causes cosmic “noise” that agitates the sea. The machines must be destroyed to prepare for the Deep Moon.

🏛️ Two-Tiered Structure

The Children maintain an ironclad separation between their public ministry and their clandestine strike cells:

1. The Outer Circle (“The White Robes”)

  • Public Face: Led openly by Elder Kaia in public plazas (like the High Sun Market in Tides_End).
  • Vestments: Pristine, hand-woven bleached linen and polished deep-sea pearls symbolizing spiritual purity and benevolent traditionalism.
  • Activities: They brew herbal remedies, distribute Salt-Sage sachets to calm coughing fits, care for orphans of mining disasters, and mediate disputes between fishing families.
  • Perception: Beloved by 80% of common islanders, who see them as the only people standing up for island heritage against Governor Finch’s tax collectors and Atlas ironclads.

2. The Inner Circle (“The Gray Cloaks”)

Naming: The Gray Cloaks is the canonical name of the inquisitorial/muscle arm (said at table, S11). “The Grey Tide” was a prep name — retired, listed here only as an old name.

  • Clandestine Wing: Sworn zealots, assassins, inquisitors, and temple enforcers. Their Supreme Commander was Brother Lorn, who is now dead — slain by the party at the Stilt Docks of Low-Hela in Session 11 (Day 8). Elder Kaia does not yet know; word is expected within 24–48 hours, when his brine-lugger The Pale Wake fails to arrive. No successor has been named.
  • Vestments: Coarse, unbleached ash-grey linen stiffened and encrusted with dried sea-salt. The grey color represents the brackish transition between life and salt-calcification—and the “grey work” they do so Kaia’s white robes remain spotless.
  • Activities:
    • Sabotaging Atlas steam dredgers and acoustic sonar buoys (Sessions 03–04).
    • Infiltrating black-market auctions (The Tar Pit in Session 09) with suicide Salt Bombs to ensure ancient navigational charts and relics don’t leave the islands.
    • Hoarding raw Clarion in lead-lined submerged vaults to fuel the ritual countdown.
  • The Martyr’s Oath: Gray Cloak zealots knowingly accept Stage 2 Salt Rot as holy proof of devotion and are sworn to die rather than reveal Kaia’s personal involvement.

🗺️ Strongholds & Territory

LocationRole & SignificancePresence Level
Great Hela (Inner Island)The Spiritual Heartland and Elder Kaia’s seat: Ancient whitewashed pearl cloisters, open-air tide pools, and council halls. Steam engines are banned. The Shuttering is being prepared here. Not yet visited.Absolute Dominance
The Weeping Cloister (Great Hela)Kaia’s temple and personal seat, where she conducts the Shuttering chants and stores stolen Clarion. She has no seat at Glimmer Reef — Glimmer Reef is a reef, not a settlement.Inner Circle Only
Low-Hela (“The Spit”)Frontier Outpost: Weathered fishing village where the party fought Brother Lorn; currently sheltering nearby in Gus’s Bunker.Moderate / Subtle
The_Hollows (Isla Aethel)Covert saboteur cells operating out of flooded limestone caverns beneath the port.Active Guerrilla Cell

⛵ Maritime Tactics: The Silent Keels

The Children refuse to use coal-burning steam engines, viewing them as profane polluters. Instead, they navigate with unmatched speed using:

  • Shallow-Draft Brine Luggers: Vessels built from brine-cured ironwood with kelp-dyed sails (such as Lorn’s ship, The Pale Wake).
  • The “Low Road” Channels: Utilizing centuries of inherited bone-scribed tide-tables to shoot through treacherous, submerged Tide-Trenches that look like impassable coral breakers to foreign captains.

⚔️ Arsenal & Magic

  • Bone & Pearl Relic Daggers: Curved ceremonial blades carved from whalebone and sea-mammal teeth, treated with necrotic brine.
  • Corrupted Brine Maces: Heavy flanged maces blessed with Tempest thunder damage and 10-foot knockback shockwaves.
  • Salt Bombs (Alchemical Relics): Clay urns or leather satchels packed with volatile, crushed Clarion salt and alchemical sulfur. When detonated, they unleash a 20-foot blast of necrotic force that blinds survivors and coats the area in caustic salt.
  • Salt Flash Pouches: Pocket-sized thrown dust (15-foot cone) forcing a DC 12 Con save or causing temporary blindness.
  • Divine Magic: Clerics of the Tide Mother channel Tempest and Life domains (Call Lightning, Thunderwave, Wrath of the Storm, Healing Brine, Calm Emotions).

📅 The Current Countdown: The Deep Moon — Day 22

The Children’s entire network is currently mobilized toward a single astronomical window:

[ Sabotage Dredgers & Silence Machines ] ──> [ Gather Clarion Relics ] ──> [ THE DEEP MOON — DAY 22 ]
                                                                                   │
                                                                                   ▼
                                                                       [ THE SHUTTERING RITUAL ]
                                                                       • Archipelago Isolated
                                                                       • Foreign Fleets Drowned

Source of the date: the Deep Moon was a background threat with no fixed number until Session 11. Day 22 comes from Elder Kaia’s letter, looted by the party on Day 8 (S11) and corroborated the same day by Gus. Earlier “14 days” figures in this vault were prep, not table canon.

  • The Astronomical Alignment: The Deep Moon occurs once every generation, when tidal pull is at its absolute maximum.
  • The Condition: The ritual requires near-total acoustic resonance across the waters. Every Atlas drill destroyed and every steamship silenced brings the ritual closer to reality.

👥 Key Figures

  • Elder Kaia — High Priestess, political mastermind, and public “Grandmother of the Islands.” Seated at the Weeping Cloister on Great Hela.
  • Brother Lorn — Deceased. Supreme Commander of the Gray Cloaks; Tempest priest. Killed by the party at the Stilt Docks, Low-Hela, S11 (Day 8).
  • Sedge — Oblivious fence used as a proxy bidder at the Tar Pit auction.
