The Shuttering Ritual

“The wound must be cleaned before it can close. We must be the silence that heals.” — Elder Kaia

Canon Facts

  • Kaelen identified the dredger sabotage as preparation for the Shuttering (Session 03)
  • He named the saboteurs as the Children of the Salt (Kaia’s followers)
  • The party knows the sabotage is connected to a larger ritual
  • Party does NOT know Kaia is behind it (she appeared benevolent in S01)
  • The sabotage arm is the Gray Cloaks, the Children’s inquisitorial/muscle wing (named at table, S11). “Grey Tide” is a retired prep name.
  • Brother Lorn, Supreme Commander of the Gray Cloaks, is dead — slain at the Stilt Docks of Low-Hela, S11, Day 8. Kaia does not yet know; expect word within 24–48 hours.
  • Deep Moon = Day 22, per Kaia’s letter (looted S11, Day 8).

Overview

The Shuttering Ritual is a massive, island-wide magical working designed by the Children of the Salt. Its goal is to create a “Prismatic Barrier” around the archipelago, physically and magically isolating it from the outside world.

Elder Kaia believes this isolation is the only way to “starve” the Salt Rot — which she views as a spiritual infection brought by foreign greed and industry.

The Ritual Mechanism

The ritual acts as a massive “spiritual cauterization”:

  1. Siphon Resonators: Large clusters of Siphon Coral must be placed at key ley-line intersections around the islands.
  2. The Silent Tide: The entire archipelago must reach a state of “magical silence” — days of synchronized chanting to calm the spirit tides.
  3. The Anchor: Elder Kaia herself channels the collective will of her followers into the Siphon Coral to trigger the barrier.

The Conflict (The Delay)

The ritual cannot be completed while there is significant “spiritual dissonance” disrupting the deep waters.

  • The Causal Chain:
    1. Governor Finch’s industrial dredgers wound the sea floor (cutting into Clarion nodes).
    2. The Clarion reacts by growing rapidly to “heal” the wound (like scar tissue).
    3. This rapid growth generates a powerful arcane “Hum” — a resonant frequency that shatters magical silence.
  • The Effect: Every time Kaia attempts the “Silent Tide” synchronization, the Clarion’s Hum disrupts the resonance. The background noise of the island healing itself prevents the calm she needs.
  • Kaia’s Logic: If the dredgers are destroyed, the wounding stops. If the wounding stops, the Clarion calms. If the Clarion calms, the Hum fades. Then the Shuttering can proceed.

Current Timeline

StatusDetails
Current StateStalled. Kaia is furious.
CountdownThe Deep Moon falls on Day 22.
AlternativeIf dredgers are destroyed before Deep Moon, Kaia can attempt immediately

The Deep Moon: A celestial alignment where magical tides are strongest, allowing Kaia to overpower dredging noise.

On the date: the Deep Moon was a background threat with no fixed number until Session 11. Day 22 is the first hard date, taken from Elder Kaia’s letter, looted by the party in S11 on Day 8 — and corroborated the same day by Gus. Any earlier “~14 days” or “10 days” figure in this vault was prep, not table canon; before Day 8 the party knew only that the Children of the Salt were working toward something.

Where the ritual is being prepared: Great Hela, the inner island of the Isla Hela Region. Elder Kaia’s seat there is her temple, The Weeping Cloister. She has no seat at Glimmer Reef (which is a reef, not a settlement).

Recent Events (Session 3-4)

The sabotage has escalated:

  • Saboteurs (Children of the Salt) successfully damaged the primary dredging platform gears at Whispering Deep
  • Other sabotage events across regions
  • Result: Industrial noise has stopped. The “Silence” required for the ritual has begun to settle.
  • Response: Atlas has initiated a full lockdown.

Plot Hooks & Player Entry Points

The Whispering Sects

In towns like Whispering Deep, local cult cells are actively proselytizing:

  • Low-level priests hand out “Quiet Charms” to dampen sound
  • Rumor: “The Mother Sea cannot hear us over the Governor’s iron beasts. We must quiet the waters.”
  • Missions: Priests hire “concerned citizens” to sabotage equipment, disguised as accidents

The Salt Flares

When dredgers run at full power, local Salt Rot victims scream in unison — a direct, horrifying connection showing the noise physically hurts them.
