Isla Hela Region
VisitedIsla Hela Region
The sacred southern threshold of the archipelago — a sun-bleached barrier chain where ancient reef gods sleep, salt cultists keep vigil, and quiet fishing outposts guard the open sea lanes.
🗺️ Regional Layout & Hierarchy
The Isla Hela region functions like an island chain’s western frontier (analogous to the “West End” of Grand Bahama). Crossing the deep open water from the Drift or Isla Aethel brings travelers directly to the low outer spit before reaching the protected inner heartland.

📍 Key Locations in the Region
1. Low-Hela (“The Spit” / The Outer Village)
The party’s current location — the frontier landing.
- The Vibe: A weathered, salty collection of driftwood shacks on stilts, drying nets, conch-shell middens, and fish-salting troughs.
- The “Least Cultish” Outpost: Because it is the first point of contact for ships arriving from other regions, the people here are pragmatic fisherfolk, smugglers, and retired divers. They pay lip-service to the Tide Mother and respect the Children of the Salt, but their primary religion is survival, tide tables, and staying out of Atlas’s crosshairs.
- Key Landmarks:
- The Stilt Docks: Shallow wooden piers where small fishing smacks, salt-luggers, and the Shadow Sprinter can moor.
- Gus’s Bunker: A fortified, lead-reinforced salvage hold tucked into the limestone sea-cliffs just north of the village proper (see Gus_Bunker).
- The Salting Sheds: Communal sheds where fish are packed in coarse brine; the sharp smell masks the scent of alchemical experiments or smuggled goods.
2. Glimmer Reef & The Outer Bleached Barrier
The offshore breakwater — 1 mile seaward from Low-Hela.
- Terrain: A shallow, jagged barrier reef encrusted with luminous, chalk-white calcification that glows faintly in the dark (“The Glimmer”).
- Glimmer Reef is a reef, not a village. Nobody lives out here. See Glimmer_Reef.
- The Bleached Lady Wreck: The calcified skeleton of an old brig whose name is lost to time, sunk ~60 years ago and trapped in the coral, where the party salvaged the single 45 lb Clarion crate in Session 10. The crate had been stashed there by the Rust Rangers only days earlier.
- The Grandmother’s Scar: An ancient, submerged ley-line trench in the seabed beneath the reef. It has been weeping ambient ley-line energy into the water for decades — long before Atlas began mining, and it, not the crate, is what bleached the reef.
- The Presence: Guarded by the Grandmother of the Waters (an ancient elemental/archfey presence that watches over Isla Hela’s shoals).
3. Great Hela (The Inner Heartland & Temples)
The main island — 3 miles east across the mangrove sound.
- The Center of Civilisation: A sheltered, lush volcanic island with terraced groves, fresh springs, and the region’s main population centers (Sanctuary Port / Hela Town).
- The Children of the Salt Stronghold: Unlike the frontier village at Low-Hela, the inner island is deeply, devoutly religious. White-robed acolytes of Elder Kaia maintain open-air pearl temples, sacred tide pools, and limestone cloisters.
- Elder Kaia’s Seat — The Weeping Cloister: Great Hela is Kaia’s power base, and The Weeping Cloister is the name of her temple here. This is where the Shuttering Ritual is being prepared. She has no seat at Glimmer Reef.
- Status: Not yet visited by the party.
- The Silence: Mechanized equipment and steam machinery are strictly forbidden here by local edict. Travel is entirely by sail, oar, or foot.
⚖️ Faction Dynamics in Isla Hela
| Faction | Presence & Influence | Local Attitude |
|---|---|---|
| Children of the Salt | Dominant (Heartland) / Subtle (The Spit) | This is their spiritual homeland. In the inner island, they govern daily life; at Low-Hela, local sympathizers provide quiet intelligence and safe harbor for enforcers of the Gray Cloaks — the faction’s inquisitorial arm, whose Supreme Commander Brother Lorn was killed here in S11. |
| Tide Callers | Embedded / Covert | Old navigators and salvagers like Gus live on the fringes. They share ancient roots with the island’s faith but distrust Kaia’s radical Shuttering Ritual. |
| Atlas / Consortium | Zero Official Presence / High Paranoia | Atlas dredgers avoid these shallow reefs after losing ships to the shoals decades ago. Any outsider wearing brass or burning coal is watched with intense hostility. |
