Glimmer Reef

“Everything out there is quiet. Too quiet for a living reef. Like the sea is holding its breath.”

Overview

Glimmer Reef is a reef, not a settlement. It is the bleached outer barrier reef of Isla Hela, lying roughly one mile seaward of the stilt-dock village of Low-Hela (The Spit). It is the site of two things that matter:

  • the wreck of The Bleached Lady, sunk here ~60 years ago and consumed by the coral
  • The Grandmother’s Scar, the ley-line trench in the seabed beneath the reef

Charts mark it “Unnavigable — Coral Hazard.” Locals consider it cursed and do not dive it. There are no houses, no docks, and no headwoman here. The people of Isla Hela live shoreward at Low-Hela and inland on Great Hela.

Atmosphere

What the party sees approaching by sea:

The water over the reef is extraordinarily clear — the bottom is visible in twenty feet of depth. The coral is white. Not bleached-white-from-damage the way Atlas dredge sites look. Calcification-white — as if the reef is slowly turning to chalk from the inside. It glitters faintly in low light (hence the name), but the glitter is wrong: it is the refraction of crystallized Clarion in the coral structure.

What the party hears: almost nothing. No fish noise. Surf on the outer break, wind through reef-rock, and — for anyone attuned, or carrying the Siphon Core — a persistent low-frequency hum rising from below.

What the party smells: salt and a faint mineral sweetness, like chalk dust and clean stone. That is the ley-line seep. They won’t know that unless they roll well, or unless Gus tells them.

Why the Reef Is Dying

The reef has been calcifying from below for decades, driven by the ambient ley-line leakage of The Grandmother’s Scar beneath it. This is the whole explanation. It is not Atlas dredging, and it is emphatically not the Clarion crate — that sat in the Bleached Lady’s hold for days, not years.

Full canon on the Scar, including the presence of The Grandmother of the Waters, lives in The Bleached Lady.

Layout

  • The Outer Break: the seaward face, taking the open-ocean swell. Impassable to anything larger than a rowboat in most conditions.
  • The Bleached Lady: mid-reef, the calcified wreck. Forward hold sealed until Session 10.
  • The Grandmother’s Scar: the seabed fissure beneath the reef. Glows sapphire at depth as of Session 11.
  • The Shallows Inshore: the mile of lagoon water between the reef and Low-Hela’s stilt docks.

Prep Only — Not Canon

⚠️ Unfired prep. The following were written as Glimmer Reef “village” NPCs before the reef/village distinction was settled. They are not canon. If any are ever used, they belong at Low-Hela, and until they appear at the table they are possibilities only.

  • Warden Thela — possible elected Warden of Low-Hela. Late 50s, broad-shouldered, salt-bleached braid. Direct, unhurried, patient with outsiders the way she is patient with weather. Quietly devout toward Kaia without being a fanatic.
  • Sister Prae — possible local Children of the Salt caretaker. Mid-40s, lean, the stillness of twenty years of the same prayer. She sits with dying children and runs the ritual washing. Devout, but not certain she agrees with everything Kaia wants.
  • Old Peli — possible elderly fisherman, nearly 80, unaffiliated. Remembers when the outer reef was navigable. Loves to talk.
  • Maren — possible widow whose house serves food and stores travelers’ goods; the closest thing the village has to an inn. Quiet, professional, asks no questions.

Note that any earlier version of these notes claiming the reef “started going white about two years ago” is wrong — the calcification is decades old.
