The Bleached Lady

“She’s been down there sixty years. The reef grew around her like a fist closing.” — Low-Hela fisherman

Overview

A partially-submerged wreck on Glimmer Reef, the bleached outer barrier reef roughly a mile seaward of Isla Hela. The locals have no name for the ship itself — “The Bleached Lady” is what they call the reef formation that consumed it. Over the six decades since she sank, Salt Rot coral and calcium calcification have merged the hull with the reef structure until the two are nearly indistinguishable. From the surface, it looks like any other section of dying white reef.

Beneath the surface, the ship’s forward hold is still sealed — preserved by the density of the calcification around it. Inside, until Session 10: a single lead-lined crate of raw Clarion (45 lbs), sealed with an Atlas lock mechanism. The crate was a recent addition — stashed here days before the party arrived. It did not belong to this wreck.

The Rust Rangers put it here. They chose the Bleached Lady because it is inaccessible from the surface, off every local chart, and on a reef already avoided by Isla Hela’s fishermen (it is considered cursed). It was the perfect dead drop.

Chain of Custody

This is the most important piece of lore behind Session 10. Know it cold.

One crate. 45 lbs, lead-lined. Five steps, start to finish.

StepEventWhoNotes
1 — S02The crate is found aboard the Nebuchadnezzar’s hold (Atlas cargo) while the party fights the Clarion Stalker. The party abandons ship and buries the crate on the leeward beach of Isla Aethel.PartyFirst contact. Caspian Alastor (Consortium) tracks them into the tunnel. Zyla Vane is unaware of the burial.
2 — S04 (Day 3)Party digs the crate up and sells it to Aluthra at The Crucible & Coral, The Hollows, as payment for a haul of potions.Party → AluthraTransaction signed “M.A. Star.” Aluthra is an alchemist, not a smuggler — and infatuated with Morrigan.
3 — Off-screenAluthra, unable to safely store or use raw Clarion, moves it onto the Undercurrent black market through The Blind Quay (the market channel she sells through).Aluthra → UndercurrentNobody in this chain fully understands what they have.
4 — S09The Rust Rangers acquire the crate, stash it at the wreck of The Bleached Lady on Isla Hela’s outer reef, and auction the coordinates — “The Siren’s Gift” — at the Tar Pit.Undercurrent → Rust RangersOne Rust Ranger (unnamed) dove the wreck, marked the hold with a salt-crystal tag, and wrote the scroll in Rust Ranger cipher. That person is still alive. Rusty Jax held the scroll for the auction.
5 — S09 → S10 (Day 8)Party wins the scroll at the Tar Pit (Consortium ambush; Silas Vance escapes), sails to Isla Hela, and recovers the crate from the forward hold.PartyThe crate is now aboard the Shadow Sprinter.

Timing consequence: the crate sat at the Bleached Lady for days, not years. Nothing about the reef’s condition is its doing.

Who Else Has a Claim or Interest

PartyClaimKnowledge
The PartyDe facto possession (they have the scroll)They know where it is (pending cipher roll)
Rusty JaxSold the coordinates — considers himself owedKnows the full location; furious the scroll was stolen
The Scroll-Writer (unnamed Rust Ranger)Physically placed the crate; knows the siteOnly other person who knows the exact location
AluthraOriginal seller; long since washed her hands of itDoes not know where it ended up
The ConsortiumWants all Clarion; has the M.A. Star paper trailDoesn’t know the location — knows the party has the scroll
AtlasIt is technically their stolen cargoNo knowledge of the Bleached Lady; their Sonar can detect the Core pulse
Silas VanceKnows the party has the scrollHunting them; doesn’t have coordinates

Is Aluthra Safe?

Probably not — and she doesn’t know it. The transaction was signed “M.A. Star,” a paper trail the Consortium has already noticed (see S07 cold open — the Atlas dispatch references “the Aluthra Contract” by name). Aluthra is still in The Hollows, which sits adjacent to the Whispering Deep Outpost. She’s not hardened against interrogation. If Vance or Caspian Alastor ever presses the chain backward, she is the first civilian link they reach.

Why the Wreck Is Here

The Bleached Lady sank approximately sixty years ago — a genuine, long-sunken ship whose name is lost to time. The coral calcification is real and old, and has nothing to do with the Clarion crate. The Rust Rangers chose this site specifically because:

  • It is on no active chart
  • The reef is considered cursed by locals (no one dives it)
  • The lead-lined crate could sit in the sealed forward hold without its leaching standing out against Glimmer Reef’s already-heavy ambient background
  • A single identifiable marker (the salt-crystal tag) was enough for coordinates without anything visible from the surface

The Grandmother’s Scar

The ley-line trench beneath the wreck. Named by Gus in Session 11. This is a location in its own right — the crate is a footnote to it.

What it is: an ancient submerged fissure in the seabed directly beneath Glimmer Reef — a ley-line trench, not a Clarion node and not an Atlas drill scar. It has been weeping ambient ley-line energy into the water for decades, long before Atlas began mining and long before the crate arrived.

What it did to the reef: the seep is diffuse — too weak to cause acute mutation, but enough to slowly calcify the barrier reef’s coral from below across an entire human lifetime. That is the whole explanation for Glimmer Reef’s bleaching. Locals attributed it to a curse; the Children of the Salt attributed it to spiritual wrongness. Neither was wrong about the feeling — they simply had no vocabulary for what lay underneath.

What it is not caused by: the Clarion crate. The crate was at the wreck for days. It did not kill the reef, did not accelerate anything measurable, and its removal will not heal the Scar.

Who lives there: The Grandmother of the Waters — an ancient ley-line guardian whose sacred locus is the Scar. She was awakened by the Clarion’s return to Isla Hela (S10–S11).

What this means for Briony’s vision: the reef’s suffering predates Atlas entirely. The wreck is a coincidental cap on an old wound, a slow bleed the archipelago has been unable to stanch.

Who Knows What

The Children do not know the raw Clarion crate was ever in their waters. They have felt the reef’s wrongness for decades — a persistent low-frequency hum, an unease in the waters — and attributed it to general Clarion contamination from Atlas dredging. The wreck is invisible from the surface and no local dives the outer reef.

Elder Kaia’s seat is Great Hela, the inner island, where her temple — The Weeping Cloister — stands and the Shuttering is being prepared. She has no seat at Glimmer Reef; Glimmer Reef is a reef, not a settlement. The Salt Rot suffering of the Isla Hela communities is still one of her primary justifications for the Shuttering.

Brother Lorn is dead — slain by the party at the Stilt Docks of Low-Hela in Session 11 (Day 8). Kaia does not yet know; word is expected within 24–48 hours, when his brine-lugger fails to arrive.

Getting There

  • Travel Time: ~1 day’s sail from the Drift (Isla Hela is a neighboring region — close, but a real voyage).
  • Navigation: Glimmer Reef is shallow and treacherous, marked on most charts as “Unnavigable — Coral Hazard.” It lies ~1 mile seaward of Low-Hela. The party will need to anchor offshore and approach by rowboat, then dive or use magic.
  • The Drift’s Position: The Drift may have moved by the time the party returns. Note that its current position (south of Isla Aethel) puts Isla Hela within a day’s reach, but this should be tracked.

The Dive

This is the primary encounter for Session 10.

The Approach (Surface)

The party rows out to the barrier reef. Low-Hela / The Spit is visible a mile shoreward — a handful of lights on the stilt docks, fishing boats beached for the evening. Anyone watching the village can see movement (potential Children of the Salt patrol).

Navigation check: WIS (Survival) DC 12 to read the cipher coordinates against the reef formation and identify the right section of bleached coral. Failure means they’re close but spend an extra 1d4 rounds searching — during which the village has more time to notice them.

The Reef (Underwater Hazard)

The outer reef is dense, dead calcified coral — brittle but sharp. Navigating it is slow work.

  • Visibility: 10 ft. The water near the Clarion leaching site is opaque and disorienting. It has a faint violet tinge at depth.
  • Cutting Hazard: Moving quickly through the calcified coral without care deals 1d4 slashing damage. A DEX (Acrobatics) DC 11 check avoids this per pass-through.
  • The Hum: As the party gets within 20 ft. of the forward hold, the Siphon Core begins resonating. Morrigan must make a DC 12 CHA save or the Core emits a low pulse. At depth, this manifests as a ring of disturbed silt and a soft blue glow — visible from the surface to anyone watching.

Identifying the Hold

The coordination scroll says “SALT MARK / FORWARD HOLD.”

  • Perception DC 13: Spot the Rust Rangers’ salt-crystal marker — a crude carved saltmark etched into the coral near the sealed porthole of the forward hold.
  • Investigation DC 12: The hold is not locked conventionally — the coral grew over the original latch. It can be forced (STR DC 15) or dissolved with acid (one Alchemist’s Fire).

Inside the Hold

The forward hold is small — barely enough room for three Medium creatures to float inside. A single lead-lined crate sits against the far wall, sealed with an Atlas lock mechanism (Investigation DC 13 to open, or the Iron-Graft Keys the party already has — at least one of those keys opens it).

When the crate is opened underwater:

  • The Siphon Core immediately reacts — full pulse, DC 14 CHA save for Morrigan. Failure: a bright blue light blooms from the cracked hold, visible from the village on the surface.
  • Briony must make a CON save DC 12 or begin registering Stage 1 Salt Rot exposure (prolonged proximity to unsealed raw Clarion at close range). The Core’s passive dampening helps — she has advantage on this save while within 10 ft. of Morrigan.

The Crate (Contents)

The lead-lined crate contains ~45 lbs of raw Clarion shards — a significant quantity. This is enough to:

  • Power an entire Iron-Graft battalion (Atlas’s intended use)
  • Dramatically accelerate a Clarion Bloom if released uncontained
  • Provide enough energy, if properly cleansed, to make progress on the Siphon Core’s charge

The problem: They cannot simply carry it loose. Unshielded raw Clarion causes Salt Rot. The crate is lead-lined, but opening it underwater exposes the contents. They need it fully resealed and the Iron-Graft keys to lock it, or some other shielding solution.

Who Else Wants It

FactionWhat They WantTheir Play
Children of the SaltProtect the Dreaming Stone from Landwalkers / potentially destroy or rebury itPresent at Low-Hela and dominant on Great Hela; will respond to the Core pulse if the party exposes the crate
The Cold Iron ConsortiumThe unrefined Clarion as a tradeable resource / leverageWill have followed intel from the auction; likely a small team arrives within hours of the party
Atlas GroupRecover the lost cargoThe Core’s pulse is exactly the kind of Clarion signature their Sonar beacon detects. This is the event that could bring Atlas directly to Isla Hela
VesperSteal it from whoever gets itIf they survived the auction with knowledge of the coordinates (possible if they trailed the winner), they’re close behind

Session 11 Update: The Grandmother’s Scar & The Miracle at the Brink

  • The Scar Revealed: The trench beneath The Bleached Lady was formally identified by Gus as The Grandmother’s Scar—an ancient undersea ley-line fissure and the sacred locus of The Grandmother of the Waters (see section above).
  • The Miracle of the Brink: At the conclusion of Session 11, the Shadow Sprinter returned to the wreck. Morrigan and Briony channeled the Siphon Core to fulfill Glasya’s riddle (“Say something true”), permanently curing Gus of his thirty-year Salt Rot.
  • Current Situation: The Shadow Sprinter is currently anchored directly above the glowing sapphire abyss of the Scar, with the 45-pound Clarion crate poised on the gunwale, ready for restitution and communion.
