Subplots
loreCampaign Subplots
Based on the character backstories and campaign themes, here are possible minor subplots to weave into the narrative.
Briony Shard (Druid)
- The Debt of Blood: Rual Shard’s debt to a local crime syndicate (perhaps a front for the Atlas Group) comes due. They don’t want money—they want information about the old Druidic circles Rual used to frequent, specifically the location of a “Sacred Underground Freshwater Lens” that Governor Finch wants to tap. Rual is too ashamed or drunk to ask for help, but Briony finds a threatening note or sees him being intimidated.
- Echoes of the Pact: A minor fiend or imp, a messenger for Craul’s patron, approaches Briony in the guise of a lost animal or a whisper in the wind. It offers her “what she lost” (a connection to her mother or a way to heal her scar visually) if she performs a small, seemingly harmless task that actually weakens a local ward. It’s a test of her resolve and a lingering thread from her brother.
- The Green Stone: The river stone Briony carries begins to hum or change temperature near Salt Rot outbreaks. It discovers that the stone isn’t just a keepsake but a dormant seed of a cleansing nature spirit (maybe a Dryad or Treant) that her mother Alona saved. Awakening it requires her to visit specific elemental nodes on the islands, putting her in direct conflict with Dr. Elias Thorne’s experimentation sites.
- The Siren’s Breath Herb: Briony’s discovery of Salt-Sage (the herb used in the Hollows’ specialty drink) reveals a deeper biological mystery. The herb only grows where sunlight hits phosphorescent “Clarion-touched” rock. If the herb begins to wither or turn deep blue, it indicates a massive spike in Clarion radiation nearby. As she gathers more, she might realize that Thorne is systematically destroying these “natural filters” to weaken the island’s defenses against the Shuttering.
Morrigan Alastor (Warlock/Drow)
- The Hunter’s Hound: A Cold Iron Consortium tracking beast (like a Blink Dog, Cooshee, or a mechanical construct) arrives in Tide’s End, owned by a bounty hunter looking for “a runaway elf.” It’s sniffing for drow magic specifically. Morrigan must find a way to scent-mask herself or lure the beast into a trap without revealing her true nature to the party or the town.
- Glasya’s Whisper: Morrigan’s shifting tattoo burns with a specific, petty demand: “Embarrass Governor Finch at the upcoming Equinox Ball.” The chaos it causes is intended to distract from a larger Atlas Group move or simply to amuse her patron. She has to decide whether to play the prankster or investigate why her patron wants this distraction.
- Isla Dorada Remnants: A TSL ship repairs at Tide’s End, carrying a crate of her father’s goods (fine silks or rare wines). Seeing her family’s front company flag triggers a side quest. She might want to steal it to hurt them, or she finds proof of the specific cargo funding the Cold Iron Consortium operations in this region.
Oszchwald Alegarten (Rogue)
- The Unanswered Question: Oszchwald finds a tome in The Archive of Waves that references the “Great Vanishing” of the previous civilization, but the key chapter is torn out. His research suggests the missing pages are currently in the private collection of Governor Finch or Elder Kaia, putting his need for answers in direct conflict with the island’s most powerful figures.
- The Sneaks Guild Initiation: To prove his worth to the local guild operating out of The Cellar, Oszchwald is given a trial: Siphon the manifest of the Black Heron, a ship docked by the Atlas Group. The manifest reveals not just trade goods, but illegal bio-magical equipment destined for Dr. Elias Thorne.
- The Distraction: A visiting scholar or rival bard challenges Oszchwald to a battle of wits (riddles or history trivia) at The Rusty Anchor. The prize is a map to a “Sage’s cache” hidden in the cliffs of Glimmer Reef. This distraction might pull him away just as the Salt Rot breaks out in the tavern.
Intersecting Subplots
- The Rot’s Origin: Briony’s nature sense and Morrigan’s arcane knowledge (specifically about curses/pacts) allow them to realize the Salt Rot has components of both natural decay and fiendish contract law. This hints that the Salt Rot isn’t just a disease, but a biological curse, perhaps accidentally unleashed by someone (Dr. Thorne?) trying to bind a fiend to a nature spirit to “cure” the reef.
- The Double Agent: A contact of Oszchwald’s claims to have dirt on both Rual Shard (Briony’s dad) and the Cold Iron Consortium (Morrigan’s enemies). This contact goes missing, and the party must find them before the information is sold to Governor Finch, which would ruin both PCs’ covers/familes.
Active Session Threats (Session 03+)
- The Sentinel’s Scent: Oszchwald’s stolen ledger was marked with invisible Sentinel-Blood ink. Harbormaster Verge (and possibly Atlas Seekers) can track the ledger’s location.
- The Watcher in the Booth: Vorlan, a Cold Iron Field Observer, has officially noted Briony and Morrigan’s magical signatures after the “Charm Person” failure at the Inn. He is currently observing them to see if they lead him to more “Fae aberrations.” He reports to Caspian Alastor via Sending stone.
Campaign-Level Hooks (Endgame)
The Summit: The Forced Truce
“Three forces. One island. No trust.”
A major crisis (the Siphon overloading? A Clarion super-bloom? An Atlas fleet invasion?) forces all factions to the table. Finch, Kaia, and Thorne (or his representative) must negotiate—and the party is the only neutral party trusted by all sides.
- The Role: The party becomes mediators, power-brokers, or king-makers.
- The Stakes: They can broker a peace (stop the dredging, halt the Shuttering, stabilize the Siphon) or watch the factions tear each other apart.
- Potential Outcomes:
- Alliance: All three factions cooperate to stop the Clarion bloom. Requires major concessions from each.
- Betrayal: One faction uses the summit to eliminate another. The party must choose a side.
- Collapse: Negotiations fail. The Shuttering fires, the Siphon explodes, or Atlas invades in force.
