Dr. Elias "Eli" Thorne
Former AllyDr. Elias “Eli” Thorne
Canon Facts
- First Met in his lab at Watchtower Cay on Isla Faro (Session 06).
- Revealed that the Salt Rot is an immune response from the island, caused by Atlas drilling.
- Revealed Briony’s mother, Alona, died in Atlas’s first seabed drilling collapse near Watchtower Cay ~30 years ago, while she was warning the fishing communities of the coming rot. Thorne framed this to the party as “early Clarion exposure” — the collapse is what released that exposure; it is one event, not two. (Confirmed independently by Gus in S11.)
- Had been in love with Alona and writing to her for years (revealed later, S07, by Sparky).
- Knew Briony’s father, Rual, and had some connection to him.
- Entrusted the party with the Siphon Core before staying behind to face the Atlas fleet.
- Status: Merged. He is merged into the Watchtower Cay lighthouse as its biological medium. He is not dead, but he is no longer an active operative the party can call on.
Description
- Archetype: The Pariah Genius (Doc Brown but haunted)
- Visuals: Tall, gaunt Drow with ash-grey skin and long, unkempt white hair tied back with copper wire. Stained, many-pocketed lab coat of treated spider-silk. Hands constantly twitching, marked by chemical burns and arcane scarring. Wears dark goggles for sun protection.
- Voice: Fast-paced, breathless, mutating sentence structures. Intense staring (forgets to blink).
- Key Phrase: “Variance! The variance is too high! Atlas wants a straight line, but the magic… the magic is a fractal!”
History & The Turn
- The Recruitment: Thorne was a star arcanist from the mainland, hired by Atlas for a massive payout to design “Arcane Stabilization Fields.” He thought he was building safer mines.
- The Work: For 5 years, he designed the shutter-locks that allow Atlas to drill into the archipelago’s Ley-Heart without blowing up the islands. He is the architect of the very cage he now hates.
- The Turning Point (“The Variance Event”):
- Two years ago, he discovered that his “Safety Fields” weren’t dissipating the toxic byproduct (Salt Rot); they were just compressing it into the workers’ quarters to keep the drill-sites clean.
- When he presented the data to the Board (“We are calcifying the workforce at 400% acceleration”), they thanked him for the “Efficiency Report” and gave him a bonus.
- He realized: The cruelty isn’t a bug. It’s the fuel.
- He stole the Palingenesis, faked his death (mostly), and fled to the edges of the map to fix his mistake.
Roleplay Traits
- Ideal: Innovation. “Science and magic can solve any problem if applied correctly.”
- Bond: Formula T-9 (Stability) — he’s the only one who can stabilize Clarion Essence. Atlas needs him alive.
- Flaw: Hubris & Paranoia. Trusts no one. Believes Atlas has sent agents to “liquidate” him.
Interaction Notes
-
First Meeting: He points a modified harpoon gun at them while calibrating a lens with his other hand. “Give me one reason not to vaporize you. I’m busy saving the world.”
-
On Atlas: “Butchers! They’re mining the veins of a god and wondering why the blood keeps spraying them in the face!”
-
On the Party: “You’re variables. Chaos elements. I like chaos. Chaos breaks the stagnation.”
