Briony’s mother, died when Briony was 2 years old — roughly thirty years ago
How she died (REVEALED): She was killed in Atlas’s first seabed drilling collapse, in the waters near Watchtower Cay, while she was trying to warn the local fishing communities of the rot that was coming. A dozen others died with her.
Revealed to the party by Dr. Thorne (Session 06), who framed it as “early Clarion exposure” — the same event, described from the inside: the collapse is what released the exposure.
Confirmed and filled in by Gus (Session 11), who had dived those waters a season earlier, saw the seabed fissures, and failed to stop the disaster. His account is the one the party now holds.
Session 07 (Sparky): Sparky revealed Thorne had been deeply in love with Alona and had been writing her letters — Sparky himself only assumed she was dead, and would not say how. This was Sparky’s own gap in knowledge, not a gap in the party’s: they already had the truth from Thorne in S06, and Briony’s failed persuasion check cost her Sparky’s colour, not the fact.
