The Tidecallers
loreThe Tidecallers
Overview
The Tidecallers are an underground courier and information network dedicated to tracking the movements of The Drift, the free peoples of the Archipelago, and monitoring general fleet and storm movements. They are the eyes of the free sea.
Unlike smugglers or crime syndicates, the Tidecallers operate an infrastructure based on mutual safety, navigational foresight, and tracking the ever-shifting locations of the Archipelago’s floating settlements.
Ideology & Purpose
- Freedom of Navigation: They believe that the sea cannot be owned or taxed, directly opposing the expanding reach of the Atlas Group and mainland naval authorities.
- The Circuit: They map out safe currents and shifting weather patterns, using their knowledge to safely direct allied ships and warn them of blockades and bounties.
- Courier Network: They carry priority dispatches, using hidden signal tags (such as specific knots in silk, color-coded ribbons, or carved driftwood) left in high places to communicate silently.
The Network
The Tidecallers are a decentralized group. You don’t “join” the Tidecallers with a handshake or a uniform. They operate through:
- Sign-Language and Ciphers: Hand gestures and environmental markers are used to pass information. A bolt of cloth with three knots or a silk tag left at the top of a mast can signify Atlas movement or a storm warning.
- Tidecaller Silk: Dispatches and warnings are often communicated via specialized silk tags that can be read by those who know the cipher.
Notable Connections
- Gus: One of the founding “first planks” of the network. Started trading whispered intel among dockhands and fishing families after Atlas’s first destructive drilling operations. Trained Longstride and maintains a safe house on Isla Hela (see Gus: A History).
- Longstride: An active operative of the Tidecallers, using their network to track Atlas bounties (like the “M.A. Star” dispatch) and monitor the Archipelago’s pulse.
- Zyla Vane (he/him): Bosun of the Nebuchadnezzar and a broader Tidecaller contact — the individual Morrigan seduced in Session 1 for information/passage. (Earlier notes spelled him “Zylas”; that is the same person.) Captured at the Battle of the Doldrums.
- Separation from the Black Market: The Tidecallers are strictly an information, maritime safety, and freedom-of-movement network. They are entirely separate from The Undercurrent (the black market). True Tidecallers disdain those who sell cursed goods or dangerous prototypes purely for coin.
