Atlas Current Operations: The Great Hunt

1. The Blockade & Search (The Fleet)

Under the command of Captain Valerius — commander of The Gilded Hook and the Atlas flotilla, and not to be confused with Director Halvard Voss of Whispering Deep — the Atlas Flotilla has expanded its search radius from Watchtower Cay to the entire archipelago.

  • Primary Objective: Recover the Siphon Core (held by Morrigan) and the missing Clarion Shipment (The “Siren’s Gift”, a single 45 lb lead-lined crate); apprehend the Party.
  • Secondary Objective — COMPLETE: The Nebuchadnezzar (The “Neb”) was intercepted at the Battle of the Doldrums after she left The Drift, and is now impounded in the industrial drydocks at Whispering Deep. Captain Morena Moray and Bosun Zyla Vane are held there. See The_Stand_of_the_Nebuchadnezzar.
    • The party does not know this. All they know is that Morrigan’s Sending shell to Zyla went dead cold.
    • Spelling: Nebuchadnezzar. The old “Neberkanezzar” spelling is wrong.
  • Tactics: Using “Sentinel Sonar” — a pulse of magical energy emitted from the hijacked Watchtower Lighthouse that disrupts cloaking and non-Atlas encryption.

Detection: “The Chime”

The party (and, formerly, the crew of the Neb) can identify an incoming pulse through several environmental and sensory cues:

  • Sensory: A high-pitched, metallic ringing in the ears (known to sailors as “The Chime”) that lasts for 1d4 minutes after a pulse.
  • Physical: Liquids (water in a glass, ink in a well) form perfect geometric, crystalline patterns for a few seconds as the wave passes (Cymatics).
  • The Core: The Siphon Core begins to hum audibly and vibrate. If uncovered, it pulses with a synchronized blue light.
  • Morrigan’s Echolight: The necklace will flash a sharp, jagged Red during the pulse and remain a flickering Orange for an hour afterward.

Prevention & Countermeasures

Slipping past the sonar requires a combination of specialized materials and expert navigation:

  • Lead-Lined Silk: Wrapping the Siphon Core or the ship’s steering column in this rare material (found in The Undercurrent) provides Advantage on the Stealth/Arcana check to remain undetected.
  • “The Static Drift”: Navigating through dense Clarion Bloom fields. The high background resonance of the raw crystal acts as “magical chaff,” making it nearly impossible for the sonar to isolate the ship’s signature.
  • Tidecaller “Ghost-Buoys”: The Tidecallers use decoy buoys made of resonant driftwood to create “phantom ships” on the Atlas search-grid, drawing the flotilla away from the true target.
  • Arcane Dampening: Casting Silence or Pass Without Trace (re-flavored as Arcane Masking) can provide a temporary reprieve, granting a +5 bonus to the next detection check.

2. Watchtower Cay: The Siphon’s Awakening

Atlas has fully occupied Watchtower Cay. They have repurposed the decommissioned lighthouse into a functional Arcane Beacon.

The Fate of Dr. Elias Thorne

In a horrifying display of Atlas utility, Dr. Elias Thorne has been “integrated” into the lighthouse core.

  • The Mechanism: His “Palingenesis” theories were used against him. He has been merged with the central Siphon Lens to act as a living battery/biological medium.
  • Reasoning: Since the party has the Siphon Core, Atlas used Thorne’s own high-refined magical essence (a result of his years of Clarion work) to jump-start the lighthouse.
  • Current State: He is effectively “The Heart of the Light.” He is alive but fused with the machinery, his consciousness being used to filter and focus the beacon’s search-grid.

3. The Sonar Pulse (The “Ticking Clock”)

Every 6 hours, the lighthouse fires a low-frequency Resonance Pulse.

  • Effect on Shipping (was written for the Neb; now applies to the Shadow Sprinter): Any ship in the vicinity must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity (Stealth) or Intelligence (Arcana) check by the navigator/captain to “slip through the weave.”
  • Effect on the Party: Morrigan’s Siphon Core resonates with every pulse (DC 14 CHA save to avoid a Flare).

4. Intel from the Shallows

Atlas Bounty Hunters (under Captain Morena’s radar or through local informants like Harbormaster Verge) are circulating drawings of the party.

  • The Bounty: 500 Gold for the return of the ship (obsolete — the Nebuchadnezzar has been taken); 1000 Gold for the Siphon Core (No questions asked). The Core bounty stands.
