Sentinel-Blood Ink
LoreSentinel-Blood Ink (The Tracker’s Stain)
“You can burn the page, but the ash will still whisper your name.” — Old Man Kaelen
Lore & History
Sentinel-Blood Ink is a specialized alchemical reagent used primarily by high-end smugglers, the Atlas Group, and paranoid archivists. It is not merely invisible ink; it is sympathetic magic suspended in a fluid medium.
- Origin: Originally developed by the Cartographer’s Guild of the mainland to protect royal survey maps from theft. The recipe was stolen and “improved” by Atlas alchemists to serve as a security measure for their supply chain.
- Composition: It is brewed from the harvested ink-sacs of Watcher Squid (creatures native to the Midnight Trench that have massive, bioluminescent eyes) mixed with iron filings and a drop of the owner’s blood (or a “Master Sample”).
- Function: Once valid, the ink creates a magical tether between the Marked Object and a Lodestone held by the owner. It works like a magical compass.
Mechanics
1. The Mark
- Invisibility: The ink is completely invisible to the naked eye once dried.
- Durability: It is waterproof and resistant to mundane erasure. It soaks deep into the fibers of paper, wood, or cloth.
- Detection:
- Detect Magic: Glows with a faint Divination aura.
- Truesight / See Invisibility: Reveals the mark as a glowing crimson vein.
- The Revealer: A specific alchemical wash (Lemon & Grave-Dust) can temporarily reveal the ink as a rust-colored stain.
2. The Link (Tracking)
- Range: The link is potent within 5 miles (same island). Beyond that, it gives only a vague direction (North/South).
- Resolution:
- Close Range (<1000 ft): The tracker knows the exact building or room.
- Touch: If the owner touches the Lodestone, they can sense if the object is moving.
3. Neutralization
Kaelen knows how to “kill” the ink, a secret few possess.
- The Counter-Agent: Kaelen uses a mixture of Quicksilver and Basilisk Spittle (or a similar corrosive magical solvent) to “blind” the blood in the ink.
- Effect: The ink remains on the page, but the magical tether is severed. The owner’s Lodestone goes dead/cold.
- The Atlas Flaw: Atlas produces this ink in bulk. They use a Master Lodestone at the Whispering Deep HQ to track all their ledgers. By neutralizing the ink on Kaelen’s Ledger, Kaelen effectively “vanished” the book from their radar.
4. The “Living Ink” (Lore Update S04)
Kaelen revealed that the ink used on his Chart of Uncharted Shoals is special.
- “Blood of the Archipelago”: It doesn’t just record geography; it records feeling or emotive resonance.
- Activation: When exposed to starlight or magical light, the ink pulses and shifts.
- Function: It reveals hidden paths based on intent. For the party, it revealed the “Whisper-Gap”—a hidden cliffside path out of The Hollows essential for bypassing blockades.
Plot Hooks / Campaign Relevance
Kaelen’s Warning
When Kaelen explains why he took the Ledger back first:
“You hold that book, you hold a beacon. Every Atlas enforcer within ten leagues can smell it on their compasses. I had to… blinded it. Cost me a dram of good quicksilver, too.”
The “Double-Cross” (Paranoia)
- Idea: Kaelen is paranoid. He gave the party the Chart of Uncharted Shoals.
- Question: Did he put his own Sentinel-Blood mark on that Chart?
- Implication: Kaelen might be tracking the party’s progress through the Low Road. He wants to know if they survive. If they do, he knows the route is valid. If the signal stops… he knows where the reef ate them.
Atlas Cargo
- The Clarion Crate: The crate the players buried might have been marked. If so, Atlas knows exactly where it is buried (on the beach).
- Note: If the players were thorough? Or maybe the salt water/sand interferes with it?
- The Twist: Oszchwald’s Shard in his backpack. Is raw Clarion marked? No. But the Box it came in was. If he acts quickly, he’s safe. If he kept the box… they are coming.
