Session 5: The Low Road to Watchtower Cay

*In which our heroes play a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek with searchlights, hallucinate the past in a tunnel of sand, and discover that kobolds make excellent (if paranoid) bar buddies.*

Breakout from The Hollows

The session opened with the Nebuchadnezzar’s sweeps hitting the water and sails snapping taut as the party made a desperate run for the harbor mouth. Atlas searchlights swept the water like predatory eyes, but Oszchwald proved why you don’t mess with a rogue’s aim, shattering a primary searchlight lens from 120 feet out.

Morrigan and Briony tag-teamed a magical distraction that left the Atlas patrol chasing shadows and a sinking sensor buoy. Despite taking some warning fire to the hull (nothing a little sea-carpentry can’t fix!), the Neb punched through the blockade and into the open sea just as dawn kissed the waves.

The Low Road: Echoes in the Sand

To stay ahead of the Atlas pursuit, Captain Moray took us into the Low Road—a magical slipstream where the world turns into walls of white sand and the “heartbeat” of the archipelago thrums in your bones.

While traveling, the “Sentinel-Grit” sand formed terrifyingly vivid pictures of the past. We witnessed the moment Governor Finch essentially sold the island’s soul to the Atlas Consortium, and heard the chilling curse of Elder Kaia, who promised that “The Silence” would come for those who never stop digging. It turns out the Salt Rot isn’t just a disease—it’s a retaliation.

Detour to The Drift

Before heading to our final destination, we detoured to The Drift, a lawless floating shantytown that’s equal parts vibrant and terrifying. While there:

The Gut-Rot Incident: We acquired some “Gut-Rot Tonic” for sea sickness. It works, but it leaves you with a bright green tongue and burps that could peel paint.

Sparky’s Warning: we met “Sparky” Gasket, a twitchy kobold engineer who used to work for the infamous Dr. Thorne. He confirmed that Thorne isn’t just mining glass—he’s trying to “jump-start” the island’s ley-lines with a massive magical siphon.

Awkward Adoration: In a surprisingly sweet moment, Zyla Vane was caught trying to buy a gift for Morrigan. He actually bought an Echolight Necklace (the exact same one Briony picked up!), but he hasn’t quite found the courage to give it to her yet.

Arrival at Watchtower Cay

Our journey ended at the jagged shores of Watchtower Cay. The beach here isn’t sand; it’s thousands of shards of multi-colored “lightning glass” (fulgurite) that crunches underfoot—and cuts like a knife if you fall.

After a quick scuffle with some Prism-Shell Crabs (where Oszchwald once again proved his lethality with a shell-shattering critical hit), we reached the massive blast doors of Dr. Thorne’s laboratory.

The Cliffhanger:

Just as we prepared to enter, a massive mechanical shadow detached itself from the wall. Project Zero, a walking industrial nightmare made of drills and excavator buckets, rumbled to life with a single demand:

AUTHORIZATION… REQUIRED. PRESENT… KEY.

Next time: Do we fight the giant drill-bot, or does someone have a key we didn’t mention?

Hello world!
