Session 3: The Shadow of the Watcher
*In which our heroes discover that underground cities have skylights, tortoises make excellent armorers, and the best way to start a heist is with accidental seduction.*
Morning on the Coast
The sun rose over Isla Aethel, finding our party battered but alive on the beach. fresh off their victory against the salt-corrupted alligator. Breakfast was a humble affair of roasted crab meat and recovery, as the group took stock of their new capabilities. Briony, embracing her connection to the wild, confirmed her path as a Circle of the Moon Druid, while Morrigan and Oszchwald tended to their wounds.
With the adrenaline fading, the reality of their situation set in: they were stranded, dirty, and in need of a plan. The smoke rising from the distant dredge suggested their arrival hadn’t gone unnoticed, but for now, civilization—or what passes for it in these parts—beckoned.
Into the Hollows
Following their noses (and Morrigan’s sharp survival instincts), the party discovered The Hollows, a hidden settlement built inside a massive sea cave. Far from a dark, damp hole, the city was a marvel of ingenuity. A natural blowhole acted as a skylight, with whitewashed buildings reflecting the sun’s rays to illuminate the cavern in a soft, ethereal glow.
After bluffing past a skeptical gnome guard, the party made for The Driftwood Inn. Run by the exuberant halfling duo Pip and Pearl, the inn offered a moment of respite—and a lesson in tolerance. Briony experienced her first “high” on the local cider (resulting in a bout of magical hiccups), while Oszchwald attempted to teach the group the fine art of “nursing a drink” to blend in.
But the peace was short-lived. When Briony attempted to cast a charm on a stoic patron at the bar, the stranger remained unfazed. He approached the table and dropped a chilling warning before vanishing: “The Consortium is everywhere.” The party had been marked.
Gear, Maps, and Mysteries
Undeterred, the group set out to prepare for the road ahead. In The Barnacle Bastion, they met Umaro, a Tortle leatherworker moving at his own deliberate pace. The shopping spree yielded impressive results: Briony donned a Twilight Ray Cloak, shimmering like ray skin and allowing her to glide, and picked up an Ironwood Anchor Staff that seemed to hum when near fresh water. Morrigan acquired an Obsidian Shell Corset, a piece that glows with a faint purple light in the presence of Fey or Fiends—a feature that would prove immediately interesting.
Their search for direction led them to a chaotic mapmaker’s shop filled with unorganized parchment. The mapmaker, Kaelen, revealed a predicament: his Ledger, the key to decoding his secret maps, had been confiscated by the corrupt Harbormaster Verge. He offered them a trade: retrieve the ledger, and he would share the secrets of the archipelago, Chart of Uncharted Shoals was given as a reward.
The Setup
Before the heist, the whole crew went to find Finn. They discovered the “sage-picker” climbing the cliffs to harvest herbs. Morrigan took the lead in the conversation, and—aided significantly by Finn rolling a natural 1—she managed to fluster the poor lad into handing over samples of his harvest: Salt-Sage in varieties of Green (Wisdom), Light Blue (Light), and the dangerous Deep Blue (Mania/Salt Rot Risk).
The Heist: The Mapmaker’s Ledger
Under the cover of pre-dawn darkness, the party moved on Harbormaster Verge’s office. Briony deployed her new wild shape abilities, summoning a familiar to scout the layout. Morrigan came face-to-face with a guard. Recognizing the threat, she unleashed a flawless Command: Grovel, forcing him to the ground and buying them precious seconds. Oszchwald had an epic infiltration run. He slipped inside, ghostly silent, but found his skills tested by a complex pressure plate trap guarding the desk. After a few heart-stopping moments of struggle, he allowed it to trigger, quickly snatching the Ledger (and a securely wrapped map for good measure).
Just as he secured the prize, the alarms began to wail. The team scrambled, fleeing the Harbormaster’s office just as the guard realized the attack. They vanished into the shadows, the Ledger in hand and the eyes of the Consortium now firmly fixed upon them.
Next Session: With the map’s secrets unlocked, where will the tide take them? And how long before someone catches up?
