Session 04: Breaking the Blockade
“That’s called a combo. One two punch motherfucker.” — Briony
The Silence Before the Storm
The Hollows held its breath. The party awoke at The Driftwood Inn not to the usual clamor of the port, but to a suffocating “low tide” anxiety. Atlas Group had locked down the harbor, a reactionary fist closing tight after the destruction of their dredger at Whispering Deep. Rumors swirled like the morning fog—talk of the “Children of the Salt” and sabotage—but the party knew the truth was far more dangerous.
The Map & The Maker
“Pins and needles,” Oszchwald whispered at the door of the mapmaker’s safehouse.
Inside, old Kaelen was a bundle of nerves, packing his instruments. He revealed the true nature of the Chart of Uncharted Shoals. “The ink is made from the blood of the archipelago itself,” he explained, his fingers trembling over the parchment. “It doesn’t just show where the islands are; it shows where they *feel*.”
Under the light of a spell, the ink—Sentinel-Blood—began to pulse. It didn’t show roads; it revealed the “Whisper-Gap,” a hidden sheer-cliff path that bypassed the Atlas blockade entirely. It was a secret artery of the island, the only safe way to the secluded beach where their loot lay buried.
Liquid Lightning
Seeking an edge before their journey, the party visited The Crucible & Coral, an alchemy shop smelling of ozone and singed herbs. The proprietor, Aluthra, was deep in his cups and easily swayed by Morrigan’s silver tongue. She charmed her way into a deal that would bankrupt a lesser merchant, securing a massive haul of potions—Hill Giant Strength, Greater Healing, Antitoxins—on the promise of delivering the Clarion Crate.
Aluthra’s warning about the raw blue essence was chilling. “Blue isn’t just a plant anymore. It’s a sponge,” he muttered, gesturing to the glowing vials. “It’s soaked up so much Clarion that the leaf structure is basically crystallized… It’ll rot your insides out.”
The reality was grim: what Aluthra feared as poison, Atlas was refining into weapons.
The Whisper-Gap Heist
Armed with Kaelen’s route, the party made their move. Briony cast *Pass Without Trace*, weaving a veil of shadows around them. They became ghosts, slipping through the damp darkness of the tunnel unnoticed.
They reached the beach just as Zyla Vane pulled his skiff ashore, panic in his eyes as he searched for the hidden cargo. It required a delicate touch: Morrigan intercepted the bosun, keeping him thoroughly distracted with her “charms,” while Briony and Oszchwald silently unearthed the Clarion Crate from its grave beneath the Salt-Gator. They absconded with the prize, sprinting back to town to deliver it to Aluthra and clear their debt. By the time they returned to the beach, Zyla was none the wiser. They had stolen the crate right from under their ally’s nose, securing their alchemical payload without the crew ever knowing.
The Ambush at the Iron Docks
Goal accomplished, the party turned their eyes to the Nebuchadnezzar, intent on cutting their way out of the blockade. But Atlas was waiting.
An elite extermination squad blocked their path to freedom. A Salt-Chemist juggled volatile cocktails, Flux-Hounds prowled with eyes like burning magnesium, and a hulking Iron-Graft Porter loomed over them, his limbs replaced by pistons and tubes glowing with refined blue ichor.
Combat broke out instantly.
Oszchwald scrambled up the rigging, taking the high ground with the grace of a spider. *Thwip.* His arrow sang through the air, finding the chink in a Flux-Hound’s plating. The beast yelped—a wet, piercing sound—as the arrow found vital organs, dropping it instantly. “One down,” he muttered, already nocking the next shaft.
Morrigan stood her ground on the dock, weaving curses into the air. She cast *Hex* on the massive Iron-Graft Porter, wreathing him in necrotic shadows. Her *Eldritch Blasts* slammed into his metal plating, denting the brass but failing to slow the juggernaut. The machine-man vented steam, his eyes locking onto her with cold, mechanical fury.
Briony didn’t just fight; she transformed. With a sickening crunch of bone and shifting flesh, the Druid unleashed her Wild Shape, erupting into a Giant Octopus that spanned the deck. When the Chemist tried to deploy a flashbang to cover his escape—*BOOM*—Briony was unfazed. Through the smoke, a massive tentacle lashed out, grappling the chemist and crushing him against the railing.
Meanwhile, the Iron-Graft Porter charged through the smoke, ignoring the giant octopus to slam a piston-powered fist directly into Morrigan. The blow winded her, but she didn’t flinch. Instead, she unleashed a *Hellish Rebuke*, green flames erupting around the machine-man and consuming him in a roar of vengeance.
Breaking the Blockade
The battle was brutal and chaotic, a clash of natural magic against twisted science. But as the last Atlas soldier fell, the *Nebuchadnezzar* groaned, its mooring cables severed.
The party scrambled aboard, battered and breathless, as the ship drifted away from the dock. Behind them, the sirens of The Whispering Deep began to wail, a mournful cry signaling that the hunt had truly begun. They had escaped the harbor, but now they were in the open water, and the eyes of Atlas were everywhere.
